Plenary and Workshop Descriptions

 

Opening Plenary Session

The opening plenary session includes a panel discussion featuring Michelle Bernard, who is the president and CEO of Independent Women's ForumMSNBC political analyst, a regular panelist with Hardball with Chris Matthewsand the McLaughlin Group, and host of CBS radio's The Big Talker on Philadelphia's WPHT; and Barbara Ferris, who is the founder and president of International Women's Democracy Center, with offices in OhioBotswana,Northern Ireland, and Tajikistan.  The panel discussion will be moderated by Xi Omega Chapter member Ambassador Mattie Sharpless who is an Independent Consultant/Advisor in international trade affairs and a member of the Trade Advisory Committee on Africa.


Morning Workshops

 

Fit, Fantastic, and Fabulous (Youth)

Looking and feeling fabulous is more than designer clothes and the flyest hair and makeup. Looking “fab” is also about being fit and eating the right foods. Come learn about nutrition and how to treat your body right.

You’re never too young to put your money to work for you.   Find out how to manage your money and get on the right path in a fun, hands-on workshop.

 

Project Runway: The Focused Fashionista (All Ages)

Wearing a designer label and strutting your stuff on the catwalk is half the battle. But do you dress like you’re on the catwalk to success? Learn what and what not to wear in this fashion forward workshop.

 

Discovering You: Finding New Flavor in the Autumn of Your Life (Seasoned Women)

The kids are grown, you’ve worked hard and long enough…now what?  Today is the first day you truly begin to enjoy life.  Learn how to celebrate your passions in life and "getting to the good stuff."

Is he giving mixed signals or are you?  How to tell if he really is “in to you” and what to do next.  An open dialogue with the happily married, singles, and relationship experts.

 

Self Centered: When to put ME First (Adults)

Closing Plenary, Awards Ceremony, and Afternoon Tea

 

The closing plenary session will reflect on the discussions and accomplishments of the day.  Awards will be given to Dr. Verna S. Cook, Ms. Denice Whalen-White, and Ms. Sophia Nelson for their outstanding commitment to improving the lives of women and girls around the world.  There will also be mother/daughter panel discussion entitled: 

 

“Like Mother Like Daughter: She Gets it From Her Mama”

Mothers and daughters share the secrets of the bonds of their relationships, why it is not always easy, and how to remain close through the years.

XI OMEGA CHAPTER is the first graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to be founded in Washington, D.C. The formation of the chapter was authorized at the 1923 national conference. From this beginning, Xi Omega and its members have been in the forefront in providing service, initiating community efforts, and leading the way, both nationally and locally.
